All is Well

I was born in the beautiful island of Jamaica and having grown up in a Christian home, I always participated in church and related activities from as long as I can remember. Additionally, I was taught to trust God and to put Him at the center of my life. I am the oldest of my parents’ four children, and I am the only girl. My brothers and I were very close, and since I was close to my many cousins, I recognized the value of being in a close knit family early on.

No More Excuses!

It is funny how we always have a reason why we are not successful. “I have no money”, “I don’t have the right connections”, “The time wasn’t right”, and the list goes on! When you think about it, the reasons are often plausible and logical, but do not get you closer to being successful.

My Story

I was born in Jamaica and at fourteen years, migrated to the United States. Growing up in a Christian family, church and related activities were an essential part of growing up and I was taught, at an early age, to always trust God, regardless of the situation.

I developed a passion for business and aviation pursued a career that would encompass both fields. I earned a bachelor's degree in Finance, an MBA in Aviation Management, and a Doctorate in International Business. Additionally, I was an entrepreneur, having founded two businesses. Armed with the degrees, and entrepreneurial experience, my goal was to be a researcher and facilitate international business, entrepreneurship and aviation management courses. I obtained a position as a professor at a local university and, as a researcher, often presented the findings of my research at aviation industry and academic conferences.

I am a sports fan and admire coaches’ ability to guide their teams to success. Quite often teams perform under difficult circumstances and coaches are tasked with challenging players to rise above the challenges to be victorious. John Wooden, former UCLA head basketball coach for the men’s team, is one of my favorite coaches. He guided the team as they achieved success, including an unprecedented 10th national title during his tenure from 1048 – 1975. With an overall record of 664 wins and 162 losses, his teams won 80.4% of the games they played.

How many times do we have an idea or a dream and not pursue it because we are afraid of failing? There are so many uncertainties and because of fear of the unknown, we become crippled with fear.

The basketball player misses 100% of the shots he/she does not take, the quarterback misses 100% of touchdown passes he does not throw, and even the most successful entrepreneur fails at all of the business ideas he/she does not pursue.

We should not be so overcome with fear of failure that it renders us incapable of pursuing our ideas. If you have an idea, put the necessary plans in place and execute faithfully. Michael Jordan, one of the best to ever play in the NBA says the following:

I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

Whenever we fail, we must learn from the experience, make the necessary corrections and keep on pursuing our goal.

Onwards and Upwards!

Affirmations are statements that are declared to be true. Repeating affirmations are an essential component of the healing process and put me in the right frame of mind to receive God’s healing. Following are a few of my favorites, taken from God’s Creative Power for Healing by Charles Capps.

•    Jesus bore my sins in His Body on the tree; therefore I am dead to sin and alive unto God and by His stripes I am healed and made whole. (l Pet. 2:24; Rom. 6:11; 2 Cor. 5:21.)

•    Jesus bore my sickness and carried my pain. Therefore I give no place to sickness or pain. For God sent His Word and healed me. (Ps. 107:20.)

•    Jesus took my infirmities and bore my sicknesses. Therefore I refuse to allow sickness to dominate my body. The Life of God flows within me bringing healing to every fiber of my being. (Matt. 8:17; John 6:63.)

Onwards and Upwards!

How many times have we established a goal, worked tirelessly to achieve it, only to quit before achieving the goal? Too often we become impatient, and give up on achieving the goal when we believe success is not coming fast enough.

I love the following quote by Thomas Edison:
“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up”

I have learnt that success requires dedication and perseverance. When someone we have not previously heard about becomes suddenly successful, it is easy to assume he or she is an overnight success, and that they got a lucky break. What we did not see is the years of planning, preparation, and dedication that individual endured before being successful.

If you are tempted to quit, remember that you are one step closer to success. There may be bumps along the way, but if you stumble, get up, dust it off, and continue working towards your goal. Success is closer than you think!

Positive Thinking

There are few things over which we have control, and a critical one is our thoughts. The mind is very powerful so we must be guard our thoughts carefully. Positive thoughts lead to positive actions which lead to positive results. Conversely, negative thoughts lead to negative results. I am reminded of the poem The Victor by C.W. Longenecker.

During one of the times I was feeling down, one of my cousins sent me the following words of encouragement.

"I speak to you today words of encouragement and life. I assure you that all is well and that I Am standing with you in these circumstances that you are in. I assure you, that you will prevail because you are established in Me. By virtue of being in relationship with Me, your victory is guaranteed. I have already conquered. I remind you of your inheritance. The relationship you experience in Me now is but a foretaste of the glory that is yet to come to you. The things you are hoping for will manifest and not be delayed. I decree over you restoration. You are in a season of restoration. Expect this and make room for this in your thinking.
